 How eSIM works?

If you have ever used a mobile phone, you probably know what a SIM card is. It is a small plastic card that contains a microchip with your carrier's information and allows you to connect to their network. But did you know that there is a new technology that can replace physical SIM cards with digital ones? It is called eSIM, and it has many advantages for both consumers and carriers. In this blog post, we will explain what eSIM is, how it works, and how you can get connected with it.

What is eSIM?

eSIM stands for embedded SIM, which means that it is not a separate card that you insert into your phone, but rather a tiny chip that is built into your device. An eSIM can store multiple profiles from different carriers, and you can switch between them without changing cards or contacting your carrier. You can also download new profiles over the air, without visiting a store or scanning a QR code.

An eSIM is an industry-standard digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical SIM. You can install eight or more eSIMs on an iPhone and use two phone numbers at the same time.

How does eSIM work?

An eSIM works by identifying your device virtually and providing a network connection. It functions with the help of a microchip integrated into an eSIM-enabled device and connects to the network just like any physical SIM card. The difference is that an eSIM can be programmed remotely by your carrier or service provider, without requiring any physical contact.

There are different ways to set up an eSIM on your device, depending on your carrier and device model. Some carriers can assign an eSIM to your device when you purchase it, making setup easy. This usually happens when you buy a carrier-connected iPhone from Apple in the United States or from a carrier and provide your cellular-plan details. If an eSIM was assigned to your device when you bought it, you just need to turn on your device and follow the instructions to activate your eSIM.

If you don't have an assigned eSIM, you can contact your carrier or service provider to get one. They may send you a QR code that you scan with your device's camera or direct you to their app where you can choose a plan and activate it. You may also be able to purchase an eSIM online from various providers around the world, especially if you are traveling abroad and want to avoid roaming charges.

Once you have activated an eSIM on your device, you can manage it through the settings menu of your device. You can label each profile with a name, choose which one to use as primary or secondary (if applicable), turn them on or off individually, delete them if no longer needed, or add new ones as desired.

What are the benefits of eSIM?

eSIM has many benefits for both consumers and carriers. Here are some of them:

- Convenience: You don't need to worry about losing or damaging your SIM card, swapping cards when changing devices or carriers, finding compatible cards for different devices (such as smartwatches), or carrying multiple cards for different countries.

- Flexibility: You can switch between carriers or plans easily without being locked into contracts or commitments. You can also have multiple numbers on one device (such as personal and work) or use one number across multiple devices (such as phone and tablet).

- Security: An eSIM cannot be removed or cloned by unauthorized parties, making it harder for them to access your data or identity.

- Innovation: An eSIM enables new features and services that are not possible with physical SIM cards, such as remote provisioning (updating settings over the air), dynamic allocation (adjusting resources according to demand), machine-to-machine communication (connecting sensors and smart devices), etc.

- Cost-efficiency: An eSIM reduces operational costs for carriers by eliminating the need for producing, distributing, storing, activating, replacing physical SIM cards.

- Sustainability: An eSIM reduces environmental impact by saving materials (plastic) energy (transportation) waste (disposal) associated with physical SIM cards.

Which devices support eSIM?

eSIM is a technology that allows you to activate a cellular plan without using a physical SIM card. It can be useful if you want to switch between different carriers or use multiple numbers on the same device. However, not all devices support eSIM. Some of the devices that do support eSIM are:

- iPhone XS and later models

- iPad Pro 11-inch and 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)

- Samsung Galaxy S21 series

- Google Pixel 3 and later models

- Motorola Razr 2019 and 2020

To use eSIM on your device, you need to check if your carrier offers eSIM plans and follow their instructions to activate it. You may also need to update your device's software to the latest version.
